Inquiries 2 & 4

INQUIRY 2: Rhetorically Analyzing and Comparing Texts

INQUIRY 2: Rhetorically Analyzing and Comparing Texts

For this assignment, we were asked to choose two texts that attempted to deal with the same topic. Then, the task was to analyze which was more rhetorically successful. We were supposed to advance an argument and not just compare the three appeals in each text. The goal upon completing Inquiry two was to understand the following:

  • Apply basic rhetorical principles, concepts, and terminology to analyze and evaluate a text
  • Analyze the qualities of effective writing and speech
  • recognize language as a powerful tool
  • support analyses with appropriate textual or visual evidence

INQUIRY 4: Remediation of Inquiry 2

This project asked us to create a webtext that revised a previous inquiry which we had written. It was a fun, creative inquiry in which I chose to remediate inquiry 2, (we had our choice between 1, 2 or 3) for a new audience and purpose. Through this project we were able to:

  • focus on issues of audience, the effective construction of arguments, and the rhetorical effects of the chosen media and modes
  • Learn about the varying rhetorical affordances and limitations of differing media and modes
  • learn how written language must change to be effective in different media/modes
  • learn how to negotiate the complexities of writing for specific audiences using specific technologies
  • explore how multiple media and modes interact to create meaning within a communication
